Sexual assault is any form of sexual contact or activity against a person’s will and without consent. It is not limited to rape, but you are sexual assaulted when you are kissed, fondled, or have sexual intercourse without your consent. It can happen to both women and men. Sexual assaults are committed not only by strangers, but they may also be perpetrated by someone you know such as a friend, date or partner. A casual acquaintance is the most prevalent form of sexual assault on college campuses. It has been predicted that most of the college going students know the attacker who sexually assaults them. The number of men is much smaller, but they also experience sexual assault.

The society tends to blame the survivors when they speak out saying that the survivor must have provoked the abuser such as an example by the way he/she was dressed or having to much to drink. The society does not keep in mind that the assault caused devastating effects on the survivor either by psychological anguish or physical injury. It is an offense to be fast to blame since it makes the victim be filled with anger, guilt, betrayal, and humiliation that is hard to comprehend by anyone who has not been sexually assaulted.

Instead of the society blaming the victim it should find measures to help and encourage the victim to increase the self-trust and boost the self-esteem. The attackers should  be shamed in public to give a warning to the future perpetrators leading to a reduction in rape and assault cases.
