There are moments in life when words just aren’t enough.
When someone is carrying a story too heavy to put into sentences.
When silence — real, present, listening silence — becomes the most powerful thing you can offer.
That’s what I’ve learned while working with the Leila Grace Foundation, an organization dedicated to supporting and empowering survivors of sexual assault. The more I listen to the stories of survivors, the more I understand that empathy isn’t just a feeling — it’s a lifeline.
🌿 Listening Is More Than Just Hearing
When a survivor shares their story, they’re not just telling you what happened. They’re letting you into their pain, their fear, and their courage. Listening — really listening — is how we honor that bravery.
It’s about putting down our assumptions, setting aside our need to “make it better,” and just being there. Because sometimes the most healing thing we can say is simply, “I believe you.”
Empathy creates safety. It tells someone, “Your voice matters. Your story matters. You matter.”
💬 Why Empathy Heals
For many survivors, speaking up is terrifying. It can feel risky — like being vulnerable all over again. That’s why empathy is so powerful: it helps rebuild trust, one small moment at a time.
When we respond with compassion instead of questions… when we hold space instead of judgment… we give survivors a chance to start rewriting their story — one rooted not in fear, but in strength.
🌸 How to Listen with Empathy
Here are a few ways to support someone who shares their story with you:
💜 Believe them. It’s not your job to verify their story — it’s your job to listen.
💬 Avoid “why” questions. Focus on comfort, not curiosity.
🌿 Offer safety, not solutions. Let them guide what they need.
🕯️ Check in. Healing doesn’t end after one conversation — it’s ongoing.
Even the smallest act of care can make a huge difference.
💞 A Final Thought
Every survivor deserves to be seen, heard, and believed.
Listening with empathy may seem small, but it can change someone’s entire path to healing.
At The Leila Grace Foundation, we believe empathy is action.
It’s showing up. It’s standing beside someone in their truth.
And it’s reminding every survivor that they are never alone.
So the next time someone trusts you with their story, pause.
Take a breath.
And listen — not to fix, but to understand.
Because sometimes, the greatest gift you can give… is to believe. 💜
